What Is Social Security Disability?

Social Security disability benefits provide financial support to people who can't work because of a qualifying medical condition(s). There are two main programs:

  • Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) — available if you've worked and paid into Social Security long enough to qualify, regardless of income or assets.
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) — needs-based, available regardless of work history, but with strict income and asset limits.

You may qualify for one or both, depending on your work history and financial situation. Either way, the Social Security Administration (SSA) requires medical evidence — typically a statement from a treating provider — showing that a verifiable condition prevents you from getting or keeping a job.

How We Help

Applying for disability benefits is a document-heavy process, and most initial applications are denied — often not because the underlying disability isn't real, but because the paperwork and medical evidence don't meet SSA's standard.

If your application gets denied, and that denial is affirmed upon Reconsideration, Aldrich & Brunot can help you challenge a denial through a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge.

What to Do If Your Claim Is Denied

A denial is common at the initial application stage and doesn't mean your case is over — but SSA imposes strict deadlines to appeal and missing one can force you to start the entire process over. If you've received a denial letter, the most useful next step is having an attorney review it quickly to identify what went wrong and whether additional medical evidence could change the outcome. Please be aware, most deadlines relating to challenging a denial are 60 days from the mailing date. You must act before this deadline or else your denial will likely become irrevocable.
